Performance of Merlin Productions v’s GHC Band Expander

25/8/01

A GHC tube type band expander was supplied for testing, and this was compared with the Merlin Productions unit.

The results below indicate the performance based on a comparison of the conversion gain of the devices (higher is better). As only one unit of each was supplied, no conclusion can be drawn as to whether these results are indicative of average performance, or the degree of variability expected.

Conclusion:

The GHC unit had good conversion gain around 92.5MHz, although tailed off significantly towards the top of the band.

The MP unit had excellent gain especially at the middle of the band, and the gain response is consistent with the expected performance of its design.

None of the units were disassembled for visual inspection, nor were their circuit diagrams available for analysis, the comments regarding their possible design approach are a result of analyzing the resulting performance.
